A Legacy in 50 Shades
Many of you know that I am a Georgia girl and that the city of Lithonia is my root. I could start here by spelling out my childhood, my education, and what my hobbies might be, etc. Thankfully, this is not my obituary.
There are two things that are most important to me at this stage of my life: how I serve while I live, and that the work I have done speak for me when I am gone. I watched my grandparents, parents, and those closest to me demonstrate what it means to give and to serve.

As the Mayor of Lithonia, each and every decision I make is guided by what it truly means to serve. Moreover, when I sit with bereaved families as a funeral director at Tri-Cities Funeral Home, I am reminded that empathy is just as important as offering sympathy.
Life is what we make it, and I truly believe that if we want to be winners, we do not have to be the best or the smartest — we simply have to endure.
As a single mother, I understand what it means to be a provider: to be present, available, and a source of support and security for my immediate family. Family is the foundation — the reason we rise each day to keep providing, serving, and loving.
Not long ago, I received a sudden diagnosis of breast cancer. I did not fully understand how to walk with the unknown. There were many hard days — feeling up, down, in, and out. I prayed, cried, hurt, and somehow found space in my spirit to keep enduring. It was through serving and working for my community that God showed me, “This must continue.”
Several months ago, I did not even know if I would still be here.
Can you believe I am turning 50? I can’t.
With love and gratitude for the support I have received, I created this platform to celebrate life. In honor of breast cancer awareness, and in appreciation of the many acts of kindness shown by my family, the Tri-Cities Funeral Home family and staff, the families we have served, the Mayor’s Office of Lithonia and staff, DeKalb County officials, my fellow funeral directors, and my friends, we have named this celebration “50 Shades of Pink.”
God is good.
I am still here.
Celebrate with me.
Lovingly,
Shameka
